First Credit Card Advise, Tesco or Barclays?

Please could someone advise me on what would be best to look into for my first credit card.

Reason being, for one off purchases I'd like to spread the cost over.

The two providers I prefer, are Tesco and Barclaycard.

Can someone give me any advice as I literally know nothing :D Thank you.

  • I believe Tesco are fairly picky. Barclays offer a wider range of products, more suited to those without credit history (Eg Initial).

But what exactly are you after? You are unlikely to get a decent BT offer with a limited history, and you shouldn't be looking to carrying a balance at a standard rate on any card.

try the eligibility checker - depending on your credit history you may not get your top choices

  • It's basically for a card I can use for one off purchases, like a television, that I can spread the cost over rather than the money going out in one hit.

Barclays have approved me for a Freedom, Platinum and Initial, 0% interest purchases, but I really don't know which one will benefit me the most.

    I don't need a balance transfer card.
  • How long are the 0% offers on each. How long do you need to spread the cost over?
  • 20 months- Freedom, Platinum & 3 months - Initial. 3 months would be fine and I can pay the full balance afterwards.
  • Hi mate.

i would advise not to apply for tesco credit card and instead apply for barclays as Tesco are very strict and if you havent got any previous credit cards or history. you will get a most likely decline.

Tesco offer the Foundation Credit Card: https://www.tescobank.com/credit-cards/foundation/index.html for those with a limited Credit history.

However there's no introductory "Interest Free" period unlike the Barclaycard(s) so I'd recommend them too.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.
