Knitting for a baby - help with colours?

I'm knitting for a baby but don't know if it's a boy or girl. I'm getting sick of mint/lemon/cream/white.

Can anyone suggest nice coloured yarn that would suit the baby either way?

  • Surely you can knit in blue and red? I have first hand evidence that a girl baby does not spontaneously combust when dressed in a blue stripey top.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!

Go for some bright colours - babies don't have to be clothed in pastel shades.

There are some very nice coffee and cream patterns ( and yarns ) about.

Also the "baby crofter " yarns come in lovely self patterning fairisle shades.

My granddaughters had a couple of little cardigans in a soft pale grey. Not a colour I'd have thought of for a baby, but looked really nice with a white babygrow. A lot of high-end baby boutiques are stocking newborn items in white with grey or soft fawn and they look really lovely.

  • I actually prefer strong, bright colours for babies - pastels seem a bit wishy washy to me and I've never really understood why they're such a 'thing' for baby clothes. Last time I was knitting for a baby (a couple of years ago, I admit), Sirdar Suggly DK was doing several different shades of purple, orange, berry red and lime green. If you want cheap baby wool, you might struggle, though - those seem to be mostly cream, pale pink, etc...
  • I asked around recently about colours for a baby blanket and was startled by the heartfelt "PLEASE not pastels!"

Apparently nowadays when a busy mum puts everything in the wash, pastels look dingy really quickly - so I was advised to use strong vivid colours, which apparently are also much better for the baby's developing eyesight as they can see stronger colours more easily and follow movement, etc.

I did the blanket in broad stripes of pillarbox-red, eggyolk-yellow, grass-green and bright-blue.

And the mother was pleased as punch :)

I used the very cheap Women's Institute 100% acrylic from Hobbycraft, which is DK - they also stock other 100% acrylics in strong colours too, and I put it through a hot wash and tumble dry before sending it too... I love natural pure wools but I'm not a baby nor a tired new parent, so... :)

What is it you are making? I made baby booties for a neighbor in the shape of mice and the colour grey. They were adorable and yet most people wouldn't consider grey for a baby!
