Your better off using a decorator they will do the same job in half the time as they are doing this type of work day in day out. Will usually work out a lot cheaper then a handyman

If what you describe is accurate 5 and half days is mad! I could do 2 coats on the walls and ceiling in a day. Woodwork might add another day. I wouldn't be giving much more than the £350.

In future ask for a quote and not an estimate. Not difficult to give a fixed price for a job like that, and how long does it take to put filler in a few cracks, which should be allowed for in the prep anyway?
No stripping involved, so it's not as if he couldn't predict what the surface was going to be like.

I did call him for a quote but when he came he said he'd estimate it as there was extra woodwork and he couldn't be sure how many coats that would take....but yeah, I feel I've been taken for a ride.

Thanks, that's interesting - I decided on using a handyman as I was convinced it would work out cheaper than paying a professional.

He said some areas needed 3 coats including the ceiling, but I don't see why - the walls are good, 20 year old property only ever painted twice previously.

    Lesson learned!
  • I would say the estimate was a contract, if he expected to over run on price he should have stopped work and informed the client.
By remaining to work without informing you is performance of the contracted price.
I would pay him his quote, inform him to sue if he feels he is owed extra
I do Contracts, all day every day.
  • My BIL is a painter & decorator & he charges £120 a day if he'd been there longer than 2 days I'd be wanting to know the reason why
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
