Problem opening accounts

Hi there

I am looking to invest in a savings acc,but have a problem in that I do not drive therefore no licence & I do not have a passport. Both these items seem to be required . How do other people deal with this.

some financial institutions try and validate identity online eg against the electoral roll in which case no proof of id is required.

if u contact the organisation concerned they will try and overcome your id difficulties, some will accept certain types of inland revenue documents as main ID or recent DWP proof of entitlement to benefits as main ID.
  • Thanks for that, but what is a DWP & unfortunately in this case I don't have regular contact with the Inland rev.

DWP is social security/benefits agency, most people are known to either/both DWP or inland revenue. ;)

What do you do if the invitation for a dirty weekend in Paris comes your way?
Blackpool is just not the same!

Neither of these items should be mandatory.

The savings institution is legally required to check evidence of your identity (who you are) and obtain proof of your address (where you live).

Most of them are quite flexible - if you get to someone who knows what they are doing... They should have alternatives.
  • OK so it seems I've got to push harder.

They are usually looking for 2 things with your name (one with your full name), and one other thing with your current address, all from different organisations.

Just give them a ring and run through the list of alternatives. A money-launderer wouldn't do that. The company still wants your business - they get more interest on your money than they pay out to you.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

Other forms of ID are statements from other banks and building societies, gas, electric and water bills, council tax, TV licence, phone bill (not mobile).

Notice of coding from Inland revenue, you can phone and request these.
