hi all,
after finally trying to Claim PPI for a closed Amex account I telephoned them and was put thru to their insurer.
They said because I ticked the box on the original application form that was that and no claim can be made
cant remember if I ticked it to have it or ticked it not to doh.
any thoughts on what to do either way
regards

When you spoke to them, did you mention claim or complain?
Claim is what you do on an insurance policy when you suffer a claimable event. Complain is what you are doing if you are complaining about being sold PPI. Complaints are normally handled via the card provider and not the insurer. They said because I ticked the box on the original application form that was that and no claim can be made
Not strictly true. You can still complain. However, the reasons for mis-sale you can use are less. For example, if you ticked the form and posted it back then no-one sold PPI to you. So, you cannot allege wrongdoing by a staff member. However, if the form was badly worded (such as tick to not have it) then it is still possible to get a complaint upheld.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). But if the form was opt-out and the OP ticked the box as Amex are saying then they wouldn't have PPI
OP - if you have been rejected (and they put it in writing as a formal rejection) you have 6 months to refer to the FOS for a review (and wait 18-24 months sometimes for an outcome) but unless you have new information which you didn't mention in the complaint then don't go back to Amex. If you feel you were miss-sold (e.g. you had good work benefits that would cover payments) then put it in writing to them so you can get a formal rejection and go to the FOSSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
