Windows 10 start button stopped working?

As above, on 2 different computers here this morning the "Start" button stopped working in Windows 10 - a right-click would bring up the "programs and features" and "run" etc. no problem BUT left-click (for Apps etc.) - nope!
Nothing.
The usual "tricks" didn't work (Google will show you if you're not sure). :(

Seems (from my own investigation, which may not be correct for everyone) that something from Windows 10 update KB3103688 interfered with Microsoft Office 2013 (which ALSO had updated) and prevented the Start button from working correctly.

Roll-back etc. did not work in my case; I had to uninstall that update; set Windows Updates not to update automatically (in the Local Group Policy Editor; set it to notify first - again, Google for instructions if you need to) AND uninstall/reinstall Microsoft Office 2013 before it finally worked and was stable again!

Hope that helps someone.

No problem with the start button for me with Win 10 and office 2013 after the latest updates, so it's possibly one of those "if the planets align and your goldfish is watching TV and you have a red car" type of gremlins :)

Gremlins and Windows 10 seem to be no strangers.

Currently my desktop will not restart from the start menu. I'm guessing it won't restart after automatic updates either which will be a pain as I run stuff 24x7. I too checked google and am going through a list of try-thises.

Yesterday for no obvious reason at all a program I run 24x7 and have done for several years refused to come out of minimised and show a window although the small "ghost window" you see when hovering the mouse over its icon in the the task bar appears and looks good. Restarting the program and restarting windows - well shut down followed by power up because of the bug above - didn't fix it. I rolled back a few days and it's OK again. Still no idea what happened/was done during those few days to naff it up.

I'm hoping that eventually the various gremlins will be squashed.

For the "fails to restart" I tried turning off hibernation which also disables fast start - no difference. I've just updated the BIOS and that has fixed it (at least for now). Perhaps I was facing the right way when I did that one?

The new Threshold update is available via Windows update or via the media creation tool.
Maybe that will fix some of your problems...

  • That's why I posted; same "Gremlin" on two machines (one desktop & one laptop) with different Office licences .......... :p

Both machines have been running fine since W10 upgrade was offered on them - apart from the odd "Explorer is no working. Please restart" problem on startup which always restarts fine.

So the "Red car gremlin" may be right .......... only, make it black, eh. :rotfl:

apart from the odd "Explorer is not working. Please restart"
Nothing new about that (IE not working). The new update ("Fall" or "1511") is a whole upgrade FYI so allow an hour of "downtime" while you do this.

The Start menu (still) works, Office and Studio ok too; games(using Steam and Steam streaming) still work too which is a bonus. Haven't spotted anything new, but then I treat Windows as a framework upon which to do useful stuff so I never delve too much into its inner workings...
