mk 5 golf or face lift leon

Leaning towards a Leon in future or 56 civic.

But are fsi mk5 golf's bad...heard that if they've not had high octane fuel from the start they !!!! up?

    As per post #2, the only ones that would run on high octane are the R, R32 and possibly GTI, the FSI require low sulphur fuel that is probably where your mate down the pub got confused.

    I can't remember if the octane was the wrong word.

    But if you're not using the expensive petrol on FSI petrol mk5 golf's they mess up.

    It's a renowned problem and not just on honest John. Google it it's all there. So I take it you've both owned this car second hand and not had issue right?

    I had a MK5 Golf GTI from new and kept it for 72K miles and 8.5 years, gave it a diet of super unleaded, and the car ran sweet for me during that time, only changed car as I fancied a MK7 GTI , the only note I remember from the MK5 handbook is that the fuel should be low sulphur for FSI engines, others I know with the similar model had no reported problems, the only place I have recalled any problems is here by you :o

    Having searched this FSI fuel octane thing, most people are talking utter sh*te.
    All this nonsense seems to have spread as rumour starting with someone noticing that VW recommend 98 octane fuel (most car manufacturers do for most cars).

    Fuel octane has NOTHING to do with power. The calorific value (energy) of high octane fuel is no different. High octane fuel just burns in a more controlled manner under higher compression.

    There are two ways that normal unleaded could cause damage:

    1) Normal unleaded contains bio-ethanol (by EU law), bio-ethanol can damage and increase wear on fuel systems.

    2) If the cars ECU doesn't adjust the ignition timing to compensate for fuel octane (should be automatic), then detonation will occur and this will destroy the pistons.


    In a highly tuned engine, high octane fuel will allow the engine to run at optimum ignition timings, this will let the engine produce maximum power.
    In older vehicles (like my kitcar) with a mechanically locked ignition advance, you have to stick to the same fuel it was built for.

    The fact your looking at Golfs indicates you rely too much on cr4p spouted by Dave down the pub.
