It will take up to 6 months to register my ownership with the Land Registry?

I was buying a flat. After 7 month nightmare, the purchase was completed last week. However, my solicitor said it would take up to 6 months to register me as the owner of the property with the Land Registry.

Does it really take such a long time to register? I’m worried about any problem will occur during the registration (for example the seller bankrupts), so I really would like to get my title deeds as soon as possible.

Thank you.

It's irrelevant, the property is yours.

    There must be a reason.

It usuay takes days or weeks from when the SDLT is paid.

Is the property unregistered at present? Is there an ongoing dispute? Some other legal issue?

It's a flat, so presumably leasehold. That means that the solicitor will have to contact the freeholder and potentially other parties (e.g. the management company if it's a separate entity to the freeholder) to register your purchase before the land registry registration can be completed. Freeholders and management companies are often extremely slow to respond.

I completed on a freehold property at the end of September and received a letter from our solicitor a couple of weeks after saying that the LR are quite busy and that it will take up to 6 months to update.
  • The Land Registry do genuinely take as long as 6 months to register new leases - they are suffering a chronic lack of staff nationwide.

Anyone know how long it takes for the price to show up on the land registry website after they've processed a transfer?

The new build estate that I'm buying on only shows two sold properties at the moment, but I know a lot of them have been lived in for longer than 6 months now...
  • Freehold transfers can be registered within about 6 weeks on a new estate, but sometimes longer due to the nature of the OS mapping work needed on new schemes.

The land registry has a huge backlog especially with anything that isn't a bog standard freehold.

Leasehold properties take ages as said above with management companies having to issue certificates after completion and unregistered properties such as new builds are currently taking even longer like 9 months plus.

The land registry disbanded their amazing team 5 last year :(
