  • Not at all anti-social - I just don't enjoy those sorts of evenings as I find them very, very boring. I like to be doing something entertaining and dancing doesn't do that for me.

  • I work in a school and we do two do's a year - Christmas and the summer. I far prefer the summer one - the Christmas one always seems part of a big money making exercise.

This year a few of us are having our own Christmas do - some will do the official do, some won't. We are going out for tea on Tuesday and then going to see Priscilla queen of the Desert . Really looking forward to it!

  • I have to go to the Christmas do, its expected of senior managers as we give out gifts to everyone (paid staff and volunteers).... however we tend to do it in the afternoon due to some living quite a distance from work and the company do pay for everything so can't complain ....we usually have a good time and home for 6pm

Never mind having to attend the works Christmas 'do' - try organising one!
I did for quite a few years. Finding a venue, giving out menus, collating choices, collecting deposits.

WOW what a huge bunch of anti socials , at least it leaves the rest of us chance to enjoy ourselves without the grump minority......I guess they're Daily Heil readers ;)

    I don't agree.
In my 33 years of working, I've seen enough to make my own mind up whether I'd want to go or not (as it happens, I've been retired for 12 years) - not to mention sympathising with most of the posters here.
Just because attending a works 'do' suits you, it doesn't follow that anyone who doesn't want to attend theirs is anti-social.

In 40 years of working (different companies) I think I went to 4 or 5 work do's.

I am not very good in large groups and find myself saying practically nothing. I don't really drink either so don't have that to make me come out of my shell. I also hate the fact that no matter how old you are you always get some idiot going on about you not drinking.

The few do's I have been on have been when I worked for a small company so there was only about 20 max people. I can cope with that and chat fine. One of them we could take someone so I took my OH and definitely enjoyed that one the most.

The last office job I had was for a large company (about 300 staff). I went to the first party and they put everyone on a table with people they don't actually work with day to day. Everyone on my table drunk like mad and were really foul mouthed, swearing and telling dirty jokes. I don't mind swearing or dirty jokes if they are actually funny but it just got too much and then I was made a laughing stock more or less because I was so quiet.

It also ended up with lots of staff going off to corners, cupboards etc and snogging or, in a couple of cases, having sex. Most of them were married. I was actually quite shocked and needless to say never went to another of their do's although I worked there for 8 years

Yep - and it also shows that people who've decided not to attend the Christmas works do aren't necessarily anti-social - some have very valid reasons for not participating.

It was. Probably the worst evening of my life and I ended up feeling like I was back at school being bullied. No way was I ever going to another of their do's.

The company I work for stopped having them years ago because there was an argument of some sort. We do still have staff nights out sometimes though and I've always enjoyed them!

I've been to work Christmas dos ranging from absolutely awful to epic.

The formal sit down meals at local restaurants or pubs have all been awful because the vegetarians always get a raw deal, the venue struggles with serving so many people at the same time, and you're stuck with whoever you're next to with no escape for a couple of hours.

It's the small-ish, less formal, book out part of a good pub and get a company credit card put behind the bar events that have been brilliant. No spending the entire budget on the venue so everyone goes home when they're tired of bad food and overpriced drinks. None of the formality that comes with being in black tie or cocktail dresses. No best behaviour in front of the CEO. Just the people you actually work with and enough alcohol to make it a party.

This year's involves a cinema trip, food and drinks back in the office, and then free drinks at our usual pub for the rest of the night. Sounds good to me.
