I guess it depends on the organisation you work for. With some, it would be advisable to attend whilst for others, well it doesnt matter. I dont really socialise at my place of work .Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

I go every year. Merely because it is funded by company. Three course meal in a nice restaurant/hotel with free drinks (though I don't drink much). Always in a close/private environment. I get on well with all my colleagues. There is always a (mostly funny) dress code, but no pressure to adhere to. If I had to pay and depending on how much, I may decide otherwise.SPC 08 - #452 - £415

Just a quick update.
2 other colleagues 'pulled out' and told me (in confidence) that they didn't,t want to go, but felt pressured.
I tried not to sound rude or sarcastic to my Manager, just matter of fact, he has now taken to calling me Scrooge - how I laughed..... Not... Luckily, I,ve got skin like a Rhino, and as he also kept moaning that people kept bringing in boxes of chocolates for staff prezzies, and he doesn,t like sweet stuff - now as I am a generous soul, I popped a bag of sprouts on his desk with a pretty tinsel bowNote to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!

I don't like them as they are usually pretty boring with dull food and bad drunken dancing to crappy music. I loathe dancing and get so fed up with people who wont leave you to sit and watch in peace so I usually go home as soon as the meal is finished. Would be better not to go at all but that often results in a lecture about lack of team spirit etc. I have enjoyed one or two of them and they were the ones with no disco."'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life

We have a quarterly update with mulled wine and hot chocolate afterwards, there is a voluntary pub crawl with a ugliest-christmas-sweater contest, and there is a proper party the second Friday of January.
We get the afternoon off, travel to the hotel is paid for if you don't have a company car (we are urged to carpool), partners are invited, dresscode is smart/cocktail (down from 'gala' a few years ago), 5-course sitdown dinner, party with live band until 2am, dj afterwards, drinks are free (although they don't serve champagne anymore). Breakfast is also included, and if you want to stay another night, the hotel has a discount tariff. They are great parties!

so many variables, as posters have shown
For most of my working life I was in community NHS - on every team there would be a huge variation of the kind of thing people liked and what they could afford / wish to spend.
Some teams would organise a low-key do (usually at a pub or indian that would give us a discount) with no pressure to turn up.
What we always did was a "pot luck" cold buffet in the kitchen / staff room (which I know not everyone has) and invite other teams / colleagues to call in over their break. Minimal cost & pressure, pleasant bonding over people's speciality; time spent was up to you (and your patients!)0 -

What a silly assumption to make. Presumably the party lovers can be lumped together as Grungian readers?
Some people like socialising, others don't. As an introvert I find social events extremely difficult.0 -

Yup! But then again I go out with friends who I'v know for 30+ years every christmas, and when all is said and done I can only afford to go out on the one 'do', and I would rather be with like minded people who want a nice meal and conversation, than with the work crew who just want to get legless.£71.93/ £180.000 -

I prefer to think of myself as choosy social, not anti social, I,ve got a finite social budget and choose to spend it on being with my friendsNote to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!
