Always good to switch things off, but a printer uses didly squat so it'll make no difference to your bill. Using sleep mode on your pc might save a little though.

Anything that involves heating will be the vast majority of your bill, so put a jumper on.
  • yer i put my computer to sleep auto when not in use

i am only going buy this http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/household-bills/10920520/The-devices-quietly-running-up-your-energy-bills.html

so even if my printer itself is off I still going to save a bit buy switching the plug as well?

Turn your printer off at the wall savings £1. per year .
Turn your printer off by the printer off .
If the printer is left on standby then probable savings are more than £1.

Power consumption from the specs of the Canon PIXMA MG5650:
    Off: Approx. 0.2 W
Standby (connected to PC via USB): Approx. 0.8 W (scanning lamp off)
So, switching the printer off but leaving the adapter on at the wall uses 0.2W or about 1.8kWh per year. Depending on your tariff that will cost you something like 20p a year. 80p if you leave the printer on standby...

That article is pretty useless. They put CRT and LED TVs together for one thing when they are totally different animals. EU regulations have said for a number of years now that new TVs must use less than 1W on standby, reduced to 0.5W in January 2013.
The article is also dated June 2014 and doesn't say where they derived their prices from. It does highlight things to consider, but not much else.

    Agree 100%

The emphasis on standby consumption IMO causes more problems than it solves.

Time and again we get posts from people complaining about their high electricity consumption. They invariably start off by stating 'I switch off my TV at the wall socket' obviously thinking this is the major saving measure.

Even my 15 year old 32" CRT only used 0.6w on standby.
