I am thinking of buying a new desktop computer.
I have some very expensive software for my machine embroidery hobby. Checking up on the software, I read that it will not work with the 64bit versions of Vista (32bit is OK). I cannot afford/justify buying the latest software.
My question is, how do I tell which version of Vista is installed on a new machine? I am looking for a fairly basic machine with reasonable memory and a large hard drive. I don't use the computer for gaming.
I look forward to your expert advice.

most of the desktop machines come loaded with vista home premium edition as that is what it is being used for most
it is just a revamped version of windows xp professional with a upgraded gui0 -
Do you really need a new computer?
If your software works on your present computer more ram and a faster processor will speed things up. A larger hard drive is always useful.
If you do decide to buy a new computer many vendors are still supplying windows xp.
If you buy a computer with Vista installed avoid the home basic version which is no improvement on xp (many people think that xp is faster and more stable than any form of vista), make sure it is at least the home premium version. I would assume that it would be the 32 bit version, but ask your vendor first.0 -
I think all the OP needs to know is that Vista is usually 32 bit (when you buy it retail you have to send off and pay admin to get the 64 bit of whichever version of vista, except for ultimate). I think if you're buying it preinstalled it will only be 64 bit if you've specifically requested that. Otherwise you can assume it's 32 bit."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I am a mac user but I had a go on vista last week and it looks to me like a waste of time. I had a PC with XP until 8 months ago and from what I hear XP runs much much faster than vista0

I think you will find Vista is alot better than XP in both speed and being more stable. Just wish people would stop making their minds up about Vista with what they have read  . Things change even OS's.
Most pre-installed Vista is 32 bit.Don't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best
Just because it's free don't mean it's good
Ditch Norton Now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wall:
Just Because you read it some where don't mean it's right0 -
Thank you for your speedy replies.
All I really needed to know was that 32bit Vista is the norm. I'd thought about upgrading, but the cost of all the 'bits' and the hassle of installing them made a new, basic machine seem very appealing. I am still tempted to stay with xp though.
