Still getting updates for XP + 80MB uploaded in 70mins

I don't pay for updates to XP but have been getting them regularly. I also experience regular large downloads, but have no idea who they are from (typically 15-40MB). A couple of days ago I had a huge upload of 80MB but I was only light browsing for an hour plus watched a BBC weather bulletin. I am now wondering if malware is being downloaded disguised as a Windows update. It's this familiar message when logging out:

Malicious Software Removal Tool perhaps?
.Net Framework updates.0 -
I've got microsoft office updates today. Control panel-automatic updates-notify but don't install. This will tell you what the update is before downloading it.0

Yes that is the normal windows update message, nothing to worry about ..
However.
Id be a bit concerned about that large upload ..
Have you run malwarebytes yet ?0 -

Are you on a Wi-Fi connection? Is it secured, that is, could someone else be using the connection? Where are the upload and download stats coming from - your Windows network connection data, or from the router, or the ISP?0 -
Extended support for XP ended in April 2014 so you shouldn't be getting any updates in the normal way of things.0
