I never understand people's fascination with credit card direct debits on here. I use Faster Payment and never have these 'admin' issues.

I agree, there's no problem at all in paying manually, by whatever means.

However, the big advantage of using a direct debit, it removes the possibility of forgetting to pay on time - and can be particularly useful if, for instance, you happen to be away on holiday or something when that month's payment is due.

The reference to direct debits in the earlier post here was essentially tangential in that the poster seemingly didn't understand that these have to be set up in advance, but for those who always pay in full (or minimum) and set them up properly in realistic timescales they're very useful - a big advantage for many is that it effectively transfers the responsibility back to the card company to take the right amount by the right date.

That's not to say that either of us is right or wrong of course but I do remember another poster who prefers not to use DDs ending up with some admin issues: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/72078703#Comment_72078703

I must be one of the lucky ones as I have been wirh them nearly two years with no issues. And I even changed the source of my DD in that time.

Me too, I got mine about 3 years ago IIRC. Used it for a balance transfer with a very low fee and since then have used two repeat 18 month offers.

People moan about their app also, but I find the app very simple and easy to use and it's very easy to make an additional payment that way also.

I've had a PO/Bank of Ireland credit card since 2009, used only for foreign transactions. Since getting the Halifax Clarity when they were offering a reward, I haven't used the PO card. However, I keep it as backup in case the Halifax card is declined for whatever reason. I've always found the exchange rate to be competitive.

When I had a problem with the card, entirely self inflicted by 'brain freeze' in a shop in Athens, I found the customer services rep to be very helpful. They also increased my credit limit at my request.

Website is clunky, but does all I want. I've just successfully downloaded the mobile app, which I didn't even know existed:o, which should make life easier.

All in all, no complaints & I intend to hang onto it.
  • Many thanks for the number. :AAlthough I had to be on hold for about 10 minutes, it is done. The letter is now 7-10 working days in coming.
