Natwest Credit Card Default

Hi

Back in 2011 I was made redundant and suffered financial hardship. I had a cooperative bank and a NatWest credit card at the time and approached both lenders asking for if I could reduce payments for a six month period.

Cooperative bank were brilliant and agreed to this and I kept my word and was back up paying normal payments within four months.

However, NatWest, who I have been with for over 15 years, defaulted my account immediately and my credit file has a missed payment recorded for October 2011 and defaulted from November 2011. I have carried on paying an amount since this default and would have been in a position to resume normal payments, I just needed a little time.

I have appealed the decision and they have come back saying they followed their procedures and have refused to remove the default. I know it will drop off in 2017 but it seems so unfair.

Can anyone offer any advice?

You did default though so NatWest are under no obligation to remove it and it doesn't look like they are going to.

Is it satisfied now as that will look better on your file than one that's still outstanding.

The system only reports the facts, not your background circumstances. And lets, face it, probably for good reason as everyone has a story behind their difficulties. Also, it would be impossible for institutions to make decisions based on background circumstances as every case would have to be reviewed and considered - the workload in that would be prohibitive. Therefore they stick strictly to the facts and you did not stick to the terms of your agreement. I understand that it is harsh in some cases but that is the system.

One missed payment should not have resulted in an immediate default though surely.
