Do I have to transfer the whole balance?

I've read through the relevant articles on the site and can't find a definite answer to this.

I've got around £5k on one credit card, and am thinking about applying for a new card to do a balance transfer. The only thing is, I think I'm probably likely to only get around a £1500 credit limit on any new card. So I'm wondering if in general when you do a balance transfer, do you have to transfer the whole balance of the old card or can you do just some of it?

Any help gratefully received.

do whatever you have room for - you are likely to only be allowed 90% of your limit

It depends on who provides the new card.

I recently used a new Santander 0% on BTs & purchases offer card and their website indicated that they "may permit" a partial balance transfer.

More generally, I think BT requests ask how much you want to transfer (subject to a maximum which is normally 90 - 95% of the credit limit on the new card). So hopefully won't be a problem for you.
