My hard disk on my lap top has failed (im backed up at least) bought a new sata hdd today but windows installation cant see the sata drive. Bios see's it ok
Does XP pro come with any sata driver built in?
Any help would be great.

I built a new PC this week, with 3 SATA harddrives, no IDE ones. Installed XP Pro with no dramas, booted from the install CD (also a SATA device). So it *should* work, I think.
Is it possible the fault is with your laptop, rather than your old HD? Can you try your old HD in another machine?
Download a Linux live CD and boot from that to check if that can see your HD?
(e.g. Knoppix or Ubuntu)0 -
which sata have you brought 1 or 2
you may need to adjust the jumpers on the back of the drive
of course you will need to format it forst0 -

turned out to be this setting in the bios
ahci configuration enabled/disabled ( was set to enabled)
I must have reset the bios default settings and not noticed or somethng? no idea how it happened.
