Help I think my computer has a virus!

Options
Hi

My duaghter was on here last night and although she vehmentley denies it i think she has downloaded some kind of annoying spyware thats keeps opening up new pages and has seriously slowed my computer down.
I keep getting new webpages that is trying to sell me the ultimate defender software and I kep getting 'Spyware alert' pop ups.
I have tried looking for the program on my control panel and deleteing the shortucts on my desk top to no avail.
It is driving me mad and preventing me from surfing the net as my computer has literally grounded to a halt.
All this even though I have McAfee
Can anyone help me. As I type there are 11 pages of Ultimate defender that have popped up.
Third time lucky on WW I hope :j

Is your virus and spyware software up to date?

If so, have you done a scan to see what they find. Can they fit it?

Report what they find on here or do a Google.

Have you got Skybot & Spybaster installed? (if not what do you use?)

What about Windows, is that fully patched and up to date?
    Regards,
    Dave

If only I had a pound for every time I used the thanks button :D

If you still have a problem then go through the malware removal guide sticky on this boards, posts 1 to 4.

I personally wouldn't use McAfee even though I can get it for free.

  • one of the best FREE antivirus packages out there is
    http://www.free-av.com/

recently tested in pcZone it actually came out better than Norton and Mcaffee security programs, and you pay up to and over £50 for those!! overall i think it was number 2 out of the 12 tested! really easy to install and run. and it updates itself frequently to keep up to date with new viruses.

the other piece of software to recommend (in regards to spyware ) would have to be http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

this again comes out top in tests! and again its free

strange how all the free ones perform better than the rip off expensive ones isnt it!! Ive had both of these on my computer now for around 2 months and been virus / spyware free!
