  • Do a clean install on your new SSD and once you have Windows then use the USB image to recover everything else.
I think this is easiest way.

So you advise doing a clean install of an OS, and then imaging the drive over the top ??

Hi Andy. Will the ssd pick up the image without having an os installed? Thanks

Whatever way you do it, make sure that TRIM is enabled. You also want to make sure the BIOS uses AHCI for SSDs if you can find the option.

But surely the image IS the OS :)

You will be writing the image to the disk, that will overwrite anything on the disk, so it is pointless putting anything on there beforehand ..

The usb stick is detected by the BIOS (the basic input output system that lives on a chip inside your computer and is entirely independent from the OS) and then the BIOS code launches the imaging software thats built into the stick you created with your imaging software.

    Hope this helps

  • Some time ago I thought there could be problems with an disk image from a HDD being restored instead to a SSD....something to do with 'offsets'.
if I'm talking rubbish or have out of date info - do say so!
