Knife blade inside the lining of my handbag - scary airport security story!

We came back from Larnaca a couple of days ago and security wasn't great there either.
We accidently carried on a bottle of juice when we should never have been allowed liquids over 100 ml, they didn't check one of our passports at all (It was only after we had gone through passport control that we realised a member of our party of 7 didn't have his passport on him, was still in the bag - he had just walked past) and my partners shoes which always set the machines off because they have metal rods in the sole didn't even warrant a check.
Scary isn't it?

I have just received a very nice leather handback from The SAK (the Company who made my crochet handbag with the knife blade in). They sent it by express delivery from their offices in San Francisco - as some compensation towards the incident.
I haven't heard a dickie bird from TK Maxx though after sending them a message describing the whole event a few days ago. - They could at least have the courtesy to reply and say they are looking into it!0 -
A year ago I was flying to Amsterdam from Birmingham. I always take my Swiss Army knife with me on my travels, and on this occasion had it in my jeans pocket, intending to transfer it to my case to go in the hold. I forgot all about it and actually walked through the scanner at the airport - and no alarm sounded. It was only when I bought something in WHSmiths that I discovered the knife, so I went back and 'declared' it. They let me post it back to my home address.
It depends on what setting the Scanners set on. I've always gone through security in the UK wearing my Rolex which dosen't set off the detector. On one trip,I decided to take it off and put it in my hand luggage and put a small Swiss army knife in my pocket, walked thriugh without any problems! However try the same thing coming out of Portugal and you wouldn't get away with it. Detectors are set on the most sensetive setting, which is why you have to take off anything containing metal i.e. Belts etc.0 -
I agree with PPs... The security hype is an absolute farce! I was amazed when we went to Italy on a Thomson holiday recently about the total lack of security for suitcases that Thomson advocated...
The hotel made us check out of our room by 10am on the day of departure but the flights weren't until evening and so the coaches to transfer us to the airport weren't coming until 5pm. Thomson offered all the guests at our hotel (two coachloads on the day we left) a room to store all our suitcases in for the day. This room opened onto the hotel's large entrance area and was left all day unattended with the door propped open so anyone walking into the hotel lobby could see a room full of unattended suitcases!!! The reps even told us not to worry when I was dithering about whether or not to take a towel out of my case or not as 'you can come back any time to get what you need from your case and just help yourself'. When I queried how secure the cases would be they told me it would be fine they had never had any problems and been doing this for years! Anyone could have come and put anything in any of these cases... bombs, drugs etc etc etc! and no one would have been any the wiser!!!
Despite this, they still asked us at airport check-in the standard 'Could anyone have interfered with your bag?' when they knew full well that it was possible!!!! I had visions of what might happen if every passenger on the flight admitted their bags might have been interfered with!!!! Security meltdown I guess!“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

Your story reminds me of when i went snowboarding in italy a few years ago when i was 17. By accident I had foolishly forgotten that i had a lump of hashish in my bag, not a big amount but i guess if you are caught with any amount at customs you'd be sent straight back to england! Customs did search my bag on arrival to italy but they didn't spot the weed, and neither did i til i got to my hotel! Phew!0

Earlier this year when leaving Paris, my son left his wash bag in his hand luggage, very foolishly considering the liquid ban.
The security guy undid his wash bag, took out the contents, confiscated the shower gel/bodysprays etc and then - returned the other items to his bag including a razor complete with 4 blades:eek:
so obviously Lynx deodorant is more hazardous than razors then?0 -
