Income fund - what are the options?

Hi folks, I'm looking at add an income fund to my portfolio.

The main two I'm aware of are....

http://www.hl.co.uk/funds/fund-discounts,-prices--and--factsheets/search-results/i/invesco-perpetual-high-income-accumulation-inclusive

There's also a class Y? Whatever that is.

Are there any other good ones to consider? I'm not massively savvy with investments. Whilst the vast majority of my money is in low cost passive funds I like to experiment a bit with a few satellite funds, hence the question.

What am I looking to achieve? Regular capital growth.

I'd appreciate any words of advice! Thanks in advance.

The Y class is slightly cheaper than normal. Both are as good as any long term if you are after an income fund.

You say you want in income fund. Why - for what specific purposes?

The reason I ask is that despite its name Invesco Perpetual High Income isnt a specialist income fund. It has a vield of 3.0% which is about the same as a FTSE100 tracker. For this reason the fund is placed in the UK All Companies Sector rather than the UK Equity Income Sector. The Woodford fund is a bit more of an income fund at 4% yield but is still in the 3rd quartile in the UK Equity Income Sector sorted by yield. If it's income you really want you can get rather more income focussed funds.

Why are you limiting yourself to income funds then? Not that there is anything wrong with that. Equity income funds can provide both growth and income.

Are you set on equity income?

If so what about something like LSLI, global, heavily UK weighted, well diversified investment trust of trusts, currently yielding ~4% overall and with a strong track record of payouts.
It won't lend itself well to frequent top-ups given the dealing charges involved but might be worth looking at for a lump sum income requirement

  • I am pretty heavily weighted in equity funds and done really well out of them the last few years.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

There are lots of income focused funds and investment trusts.

I am also looking to develop an income focused portfolio, I am also trying to avoid too much Uk focus as my main pension fund is overweight in Uk equities.

Ones that I have recently invested in are:
    Artemis global income (equity fund)
    Artemis strategic bond (bond fund)
    Murray international (equity Investment trust)
