Roughly how much should a 40 yr old female civil servant just passed her driving test with a Ford Ka (value £4K) living in Manchester have to pay for comprehensive car insurance ? Just need an idea to see whether the whole 'running a car' thing is financially viable. Many thanks for any estimates.

Do dummy quotes online to get a fairly accurate idea.0

Original poster again: Because this is a totally hypothetical idea at this stage there's just too much stuff to invent filling in web quotes - just thought I could get a rough idea to start with, would it typically cost a few £100's or a few £1000's ?0

What would you have to invent?0 -

Depends what ltr i guess, but anything over a grand would be theft.0 -
My insurance is usually around £300 with 75% discount so I would expect £1200 for sooner with no Ncb.0

When I passed my test a couple of years ago (I was 27) living in Manchester city center, for a KA costing about £1000, the insurance was about £1500. It went down quite a bit when moving out of the city center, and now with 2 years no claims its £500.
I would look on Autotrader and find the registration of a car similar to what you want to buy, its the only way of getting a good idea as there are so many variables.0 -

As Quentin advised above, you can get a quote without the reg number. If you use comparison sites you will get a very good idea of lots of insurers without having to input the information loads of times.
I did it when I was considering which car to buy after my old one ended its days in the scrapyard. :-)0
