Direct debit to Wrong mortgage...

Hi everyone,
This is my first post so please excuse me if its in the wrong area.
Basically, spoke to Nationwide 3 weeks ago, got them to set up a new direct debit from my New NW current account for my NW mortgage. I didn't know my mortgage number so the lady found it by my address etc.
Checked my account Friday and they've paid the money into some guys mortgage, not mine. I have his name, mortgage number and mortgage amount (3 of 4 of the security questions I was asked for my own mortgage enquiry). I can only assume he has my name, account and sort number.
They opened a complaint for me, just to get my money back, but where do I stand as far as Data Protection breach etc? The girl in complaints mentioned compensation, but anyone else had an issue like this?
