Recovering emails in Win 10

I upgraded my wifes Win 7 laptop to Win 10 the other day and was unable to back up her emails (it was using the stock email program (Windows Mail) - because there didn't appear to be a simple way of doing this...
Anyway - Win 10 is now up and running but doesn't appear to have any equivalent email program to Windows Mail
I have installed Thunderbird but where are all of her email addresses and emails ?

  • typev the name and email addresses into the setting in thunderbird

what was your email address xxxxx@WHAT.wHAT?

just the last section will do

Windows 10 does have a built in mail client, althou its quite basic. Windows 7 doesn't actually have a built in client, Windows mail was a separate download and not part of the original OS

Was the old email using pop or imap ?

If it was using imap, the emails should still be on the server and will be downloaded once you connect the client.
If it was by Pop, then you would need to extract the emails from windows mail

Lots of questions here... if it was "windows live mail" AND you did an UPGRADE you should still have "windows live mail" AND email!?!?

Try... in Thunderbird ... Tool... Import ... Everything (or just mail and see if it says "windows live mail")..... more to follow...

EDIT: all your (windows 7) mail (pop) should be under here
    C:\Users\<Windows user account>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
Have a look. Is there anything there?

    EDIT2: or look under
    C:\Windows.old\Users\<Windows user account>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

you said you had INSTALLED thunderbird , not that you had set it up and were now receiving new mails , you also did not state WHAT type of mails you were getting (pop3 or imap)

perhaps giving more info , might have helped , go sort it yourself now,

My wife used to use Windows Live Mail - for her mail - when upgraded, this was missing from Win 10 (and still is) - hence the install of Thunderbird !
But - she is now happy (evidently, she didn't want to keep her old emails and in any case, has her email addresses on her phone !!!)
    Thanks all for your help.

If your wife decides she want her emails on her computer, Windows Live Mail can be downloaded from here

    http://windows-live-mail.en.softonic.com/

Sometimes it can be downloaded as part of Windows Essentials.

I use Windows 10 and Live Mail, and all my emails were downloaded when I had installed and set up the programme.

    Good luck

I would download it direct from Microsoft. You just search for Windows Live Essentials. Run the installer and if you just want the mail program untick all the other applications during the setup.
