    Quote - fixed price

    Estimate - best guess

I would have no interest in working on a day rate, most good tradesman have full order books , most arnt interested in dragging extra days out of jobs as most already have multiple jobs lined up back to back.

If the job is done to a good standard and there are no complaints or snags then pay the man.

Time is pretty much immaterial its overall job cost/finish that counts? If you only got one quote/estimate you’re are a fool and if you had others you should be able to calculate market value for works regardless of if they take 1 or 100 days.

This differs from employing someone on a "day rate" as they would not give you prices of materials etc Just how much they charge per day?
  • As others have said if it was a priced job then just pay the price quoted and be happy it was done quicker than expected; if it was a hourly rate job then the price charged should reflect the time taken. Some builders will overstate the time on site to give them some flexibility without the customer complaining. If he had quoted 1 day and it had taken a day and half you would have complained; he quotes 2 days and you are happy that the job is done in 1, it's a lesson from Scotty in Star Trek!

    Sometimes builders just can't win.

Builder finishing early is a good thing! Can't think how many people I've heard stressed that they finished late!!

The builder may of only been at your property for one day, that is not to say he wasn't working on your project for two days though.

I have always erred on the side of safety when setting a guide time for a job. Every client likes a job finished ahead of schedule, so I set my time to achieve this. Of course, thing go wrong so my estimates do not always work. But it makes good commercial sense to work like this.

OP does not have a leg to stand on. The job will have required thought and planning, materials may have been collected, debris may have been taken to off site skips or a recycling centre, return visits may be needed to obtain payment, defects may arise...to name some that spring to mind. All of these would be likely outside the "day" that OP witnessed.

I suggest OP stands back and considers their suitability to obtain future tradespeople with their line of thought process.

I have read this a dozen times and still can't get my head round it.

Could the builder have been working on your house when he wasn't there, like a ghost, or do you mean 2 builders came to do the work so that's 2 man-days?

Or a day was spent sorting out materials and etc.

As above, the OP can't have it both ways IMO.

My car was serviced recently. They said 4 hours, but it was ready in 2! Should I ask for a discount?

I can't help but notice that the OP has not replied as to whether they would expect to pay more if the job had taken longer than quoted.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
