There are some horrendously priced ones aren't there? I'm still using the Philips I bought about 25 years ago. It's been re-wired once. The button you press to squirt water onto the material doesn't work now but other than that it's fine. I would like a cordless one though because I'm a bit cack-handed with it and struggle with where to put the wire!

In five years I went through a dozen irons, and about £150 on electricians every couple of years to fix or replace the fuse box or retire the socket! I bought £5 irons and more expensive £40 irons and all 'blew up'.

After the last iron blew, and I had some vouchers to spend, I bought a Rowena steam generator, retailing between £150 and £280! This was after I discovered my lbm and I paid £140 for it. Nearly three years ago and I've not had to pay an electrician either:j

i have a cheap iron now £15.99 not on offer. when I moved here i got an iron in a 75% off sale i paid £30 and thought i got a bargain at the time - i never liked it the steam function left marks on dark clothing, it was heavy and my brother managed to burn a work shirt on it and i was never able to clean the burnt residue off the iron and it used to catch on things!!
Several times i used my mum's cheapy iron (when going round to her's before going out) as my outfit would need to be taken to work beforehand i would iron it at hers. so after 9 years i scraped my iron and got a basic steam iron!! I prefer it - wish i had done it years ago!!

Well, after much eye boggling research and confusion as each brand seems to have 5 or 6 different models with only small differences.
I took Pollycat's advice and looked at the offers. I chose a Tefal steam generator which was less than half price in @rgos. The reviews seemed good and it appears well built. Haven't had a test run yet.
Do let us know how you get on with it. :)

I tried it out yesterday and...... it is totally amazing ! I am so pleased with it. Horrible creases that normally would take lots of back and forth to mostly remove with my old iron.... one 'swoosh' and gone !! It really does cut down the time ironing and is far more effective.

The only downside is it really does produce clouds of steam so wouldn't be good to use in a house prone to condensation and will be evil to use in the hot summer months if you are prone to being 'hot and bothered' as I am (at a 'funny age' !!)

I am particularly pleased as I love sewing and 'refashioning' garments and I am sure this will remove lingering creases from previous seams, as well as sterilising any charity shop purchases.

I'll see if I can find the link to it if anyone is interested. It was expensive but , for me at least worth it .

    Edit.... http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3897856.htm

    Was £289.99 reduced to £129.99

    That's an impressive bargain. :T

Does it sit on the edge of your ironing board (where your iron would normally go?
  • Yes, it sits on the ironing board nicely. It is a lot more bulky than a conventional iron though. I'm not quite sure where it will live when the ironing board is disassembled. It can stay where it is in my sewing area until visitors are expected :rotfl:
