To start with, I hate ironing and only iron clothing that really needs it like cotton shirts. However I enjoy sewing and use the iron a lot to press seams etc.
On to the problem. My iron has stopped working (due to DH leaving it plugged in and turned on overnight !!!!! ), I'm not sorry, I hated it ! It leaked water and was difficult to fill. It was a cheap and cheerful one from a supermarket.
So I'm looking online to plan a replacement and there now seems to be a HUGE variation in what you can get, Some seem to sit on a huge 'baseplate' what does this do ? What is steam generator ? Don't all irons have steam? Why do some irons cost £300 do they actually do the ironing automatically .
I'm totally confused between the difference between a £19.99 bog standard and a £300 possibly robotic steam generator.
Can someone enlighten me please?
PS my mother still uses the VERY heavy non steam iron she bought in 1956 when she married and refuses to replace it (it has been rewired).

Maybe look at this to decide what type would suit you:

I look at 'shot of steam' figure, I like a decent amount as it's good for pressing.0 -

£1499.95....... makes the £300 ones seem cheapStill fails on the robotic functions though

Do you really think you should be posting that on a money saving website?:rotfl:
I used to like Tefal irons, they have (had?) a ceramic soleplate but the 2 I had blew up and fused all the lights.
Then I had a Philips one which I wasn't that keen on and now I've got a Bosch which needs refilling every 10 minutes or so.
If I was looking now, I'd see which ones were on offer - either half price or near - and then read the reviews.0 -
Like the OP I iron as little of possible - in fact can't remember the last time I actually did any ironing! I only really use mine when I do sewing to press the seams open etc.
I've only got a cheap steam iron which I bought about 10 years ago and it does all I need it to do.
If you're only ironing occasionally I can't see the point in spending much money on one.

Nothing feels nicer than getting into clean, freshly-ironed bedding.
I quite like ironing, I don't do underwear or towels though.0 -
I don't mind ironing myself. Get the telly on, basket of clean clothes one side and a hanging rail the other and within an hour the lot is done.
I have a Tefal iron. Not very fancy. Plenty of steam when required. About £50. I do prefer using the steam generator iron but couldn't justify spending so much.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)

Well, after much eye boggling research and confusion as each brand seems to have 5 or 6 different models with only small differences.
I took Pollycat's advice and looked at the offers. I chose a Tefal steam generator which was less than half price in @rgos. The reviews seemed good and it appears well built. Haven't had a test run yet.Decluttering, 20 mins / day Jan 2024 2/20 -
Another one here for rating Tefal. Had several over the years but Tefal has always stood out well and lasted the longest.
BTW I don't mind ironingCat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money:beer:

I'm not fond of ironing (the only items I mass iron as a chore is bedding) but have a habit of ironing my clothes every morning regardless of whether they need it or not. Bedding aside, I avoid linen garmens like the plague.
I have an inexpensive Tefal iron and can proudly claim it has lasted me for nearly 15 years!Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!
