Cheaper Trainfare, Bham --> Norwich

When is the best time to book for cheap train fares... apart from 3 months in advance?

I booked a London train fare about 4 days before last week and got Value Advance Single C's which were about half the price of a saver return... but having looked at return and single tickets for both halves of a Bham--> Norwich ticket in 2 weeks time the cheapest I can get is £40, and its just standard singles, no Value Advance singles.... was I just lucky to get Value advance singles last week or do they release more closer to the journey or what?

The journey I'm doing is Bham New St to Norwich.
Leaving on Thursday 6th September arriving sometime in the day.
Returning on Monday 10th September, leaving sometime in the afternoon or later.

Thanks people.

    Try split ticketing - Leicester Peterborough Ely at a guess. No guarantees but it might work

    However you are wrong about no cheap tickets. I've just looked it up and they are available at £15 or £17 each way

    Perhaps consider doing New St to Euston, then Liverpool St to Norwich

    If you are aged 50 or over Central Trains are doing a return for £10
