Selling clothing..

We have a load of surplus to requirements clothing, currently sitting in bin bags. Complete mixture of stuff, really.

What's the best way of turning these into cash?

From watching sellers of clothes at bootsales, they rarely seem to do much business. What about ebay, is that more profitable?

Do we simply forget it and bundle it all off to the charity shop?

I'm willing to put a little work into maximising our return.

Any tips..?

  • What kind of clothes are we talking about...

Are these branded or designer items?

Good quality stuff in good condition but nothing special or "designer". Some of it new (Tagged and untagged)

Anyway, I'd have thought it against the moneysaving ethic to buy designer clothing!

Would I be better selling them as a job lot? Do those shops still exist that sell on a commission?
  • My advice would be to check current & completed listing on Ebay for items are similar to the ones that you have...that way you'll get a rough idea of the sort of money you could possibly make.

Also check out the wholesale section....

If you've got anything outstanding or unusual that will look good in a photo (preferably modelled with a white background), then eBay it - you may get a fiver per item.

Anything dull or worn out (with no designer label) may have to be relisted several times on eBay before it sells at all, and even then you may get £1 - by the time you've packaged it up etc it hardly seems worthwhile!

You can sell clothes at boot sales, but if you really want to get rid you're looking at 20p an item... personally, I tend to give anything dull to charity in the knowledge that they'll make more out of it than I would, and they'll use the garments / cash for a good cause.

  • Anything "vintage" (1980s or earlier) is best on eBay. Certain labels also tend do well (Monsoon is still popular), and BNWT (brand new with tags) items from brands like Next and M&S usually do OK on eBay too: I recently got over 1/3 of the RRP for a BNWT Next suit! EBAy is also sometimes good for decent things in unusual sizes.
Bog-standard used clothes are genrally better at boot sales, priced about 50p-£1 per item. Presentation helps: use a rail to display them if you can. Any leftovers can go to the charity shop. They tend to be fussy these days, so I tend to give things with minor defects (e.g. a tiny hole or replacement button which doesn't quite match) to jumble sales.
