first car insurance as named driver

Hi Son is coming up to 17 and wants his first car. Is it still possible and cheaper for me to own/ insure it, and add him as a named driver for a couple of years?
Car will be a cheap run around 1000cc or under.
Anyone done this?:D

You can do this - don't attempt fronting and make him the main driver.
You say the car will be cheap to run but that won't include the insurance!0 -
Don't understand what you mean..I just wondered if the insurance would be cheaper if I used the car as well and had him as named driver to give him a NCD0

Insurers are suspicious over parents owning a second car and having 17 year old's as an additional driver (ie not the main driver)
But there will be no problem if he is the main driver on your policy. Though once he passes his test still expect a big premium
Normal NCD is usually only given to the policyholder, though some insurers give "named driver" NCD, this can only be used by the named driver to buy a policy with the same insurer.0 -
In general it will be easier / cheaper if the owner, keeper, policyholder and the main driver are all the same person. Anything out of the ordinary will cut some insurers out of the market.
But in principle there is nothing wrong with you owning and/or being the registered keeper as long as whoever is the policyholder is extremely honest with the insurer about the owner / keeper and who is the main driver.
Lying about ownership or who is the main driver will invalidate the insurance and is a criminal offence. We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
