How much do you budget/spend per year on holidays?

  • I usually budget £500 on a January break (European city) 1000 for Easter European beach) £7000 for Summer (West Coast USA) and £4,000 for New Year (usually North America). I am terrible at buying presents for Christmas so I usually just surprise the wife and child with a getaway.

We used to budget for a summer holiday in a 4* hotel in school holidays short haul. Two rooms as the kids were with us and I refuse to spend a holiday with all 4 of us in 1 room. In tight years we would rent a 2 bed apartment on the proviso that we ate out a lot.

Now we holiday without the kids, so travel further but during term times and only need 1 room, so the budget stretches to nicer hotels, plus we have an abundance of avios so mainly fly business class.

  • It surprises me to read of all the people who scrimp on other things (or at least don't indulge much) and are happy to spend on holidays. I thought it was just me! :) I kept a car for 7 years, we're in our 'forever home' and have done a lot of work on it when we moved in, so don't have a lot of expenses in that area. We rarely eat takeaways or even pre-prepared food - we just don't like it much either. We go out for meals and drink occasionally but not that often. We shop when we are in the US, saving money.

As for our holidays - last few years we have been to Thailand in January, this costs about £400 or so for a flight each, and about £700 or so for hotels. In May we used a reward flight and did San Diego and Vegas. Total cost was around £700 plus spends. September we did Vegas, probably around £2500 for us both plus spends. We also did Wimbledon and a mini cruise. I guess we've spent over £5k this year, and that might be partly because we got a free flight in May! That said, we'd normally go to Europe early summer rather than the US.

We love our holidays though, and we're happy to spend to get them. I'm perhaps surprised how much we've spent though!! :)
