Virgin Media multiple searches?

Recently checked my credit report with Clear Score and it told me that one of my negatives was making more than a few applications for credit in the past year.
Confused (and knowing I hadn't made lots of applications), I decided to investigate further. The only "application" I've made was with Virgin Media but they've done THREE separate hard searches on me on the same day (the day I opened the account).
I'm really quite annoyed to be honest. One search is on my current address and the other two are on my two previous addresses. Was it necessary for them to do it as three separate searches and is this how things usually work? Also, how will this affect me?

The effect of the searches drops off fairly quickly, as after 3-6 months any new accounts from the search would be reporting.
I'm not 100% but I think most lenders pulling your credit file can see the category of the search and it mot being a loan or credit card will help0
