I've had nothing but excellent service from BG. They took on the contract when my insurance based one declined to renew because the boiler was 10 years old. They have been called a couple of times for faults in the boiler controls and come very quickly.
The last time, earlier this year they came the same day as I reported the problem. well worth the money in my opinion.
In my experience, heating problems normally occur when its very cold and I don't want to be waiting on the convenience of a "one man band operator".
I have only insured the boiler and the controls, not the whole system. I think it is money well spent.

We have boiler cover (incl annual service) with British Gas. Never had anything go wrong with the boiler but how would we know that regular servicing hasnt mitigated that?

Granted, we could just pay a local heating engineer to service the boiler once a year but then if it did break down just once every 2 or 3 years, the repair costs could well be more than the extra we pay monthly for the cover.

Just be mindful that older boilers, parts can become not available to the company that are doing the service plan but maybe available on a wider market (even ebay), so you may need to pay a local engineer to fit that part anyway.

Mine has broken down twice in 35 years and the cost of fixing each time was about what you would have paid for a couple of months' cover.

And, yes, I could still find parts last time but if I'd had 'cover', I'm sure I would have been told I would have to buy a new boiler.

It's not the cost for me but the peace of mind of not having to find an engineer in the middle of the winter if the boiler breaks down. Finding a competent plumber at short notice and a reasonable price is like looking for hens teeth where I live.

  • It might be worth it if you think you might not have the funds to cover any repairs and are out of warranty.

Our 18 month old Baxi has a 10 year warranty. We have a decent emergency fund in our household budget that would cover the cost of any unexpected repairs so some kind of cover plan seems like a complete waste of money to me.
