Moving house/switching

Hi
We currently rent our home and get dual fuel from EDF, currently on Standard variable, monthly DD, as we've let our fixed priced tariff lapse.
We're buying our next home and move in approximately a month. We don't want to continue with EDF, nor do we want to use the current provider in the house we're moving into. They have Sparks.
Question - is it better to switch provider in our current house and transfer it with us when we move, or set up a new provider for when we move into the new house?
Thanks

Afraid you will have to set up an account with Spark when you move in. So take meter readings and let Spark know On moving in day if poss.
Then you will be able to switch to one of your choice so will only have a few weeks with Spark.0 -

When you move in to another property, you are on a deemed contract with the existing supplier. There is no genuine process to transfer a supplier to another property.
So, move, accept the deemed contract - which has a minimum period of 28 days IIRC and organise a switch to whichever company you require.0 -
I'm bumping as I'm having the same thoughts. Buying my first house Wednesday and decided on OVO as my first energy supplier (no early exit charge & currently don't know my energy usage).
I'm pretty sure the current vendors have gone beyond a fixed contract but assuming they are 6 months into a 12 month contract am I forced to see out the remainder of that contract or liable for the exit fees?
Do I have to tell them right away that I don't plan to stay with them in case they put me on a new 12 month fixed when I first ring to say I'm the new owner?Mortgage (Nov 15): £79,950 | Mortgage (May 19): £71,754 | Mortgage (Sep 22): £0

You are not forced into any contract with the current supplier. As soon as you flick a light switch you are in a deemed contract with that supplier at their standard rates with no minimum term or exit fees. As soon as you move in contact the incumbent supplier and give them meter readings. They can not enter you into a minimum term contract without your express permission - don't entertain any talk of "special rates" as that will usually mean a contract. Then contact your preferred supplier and initiate a switch.0

Hi ontheblitz
You've had great advice from other members here, so I've not got much to add.
You're not tied into a contract with Spark Energy if we're the supplier when you move in, you do enter into a "deemed" contract meaning we would bill you until you change supplier, but I would be happy to help you go through the transfer process if you don't want to stay with us.
You can contact me directly using the email address on my profile, I'd just need the address we supply, your forum name and your real name.
