Are you sure you have 2 policies??

You say in your OP that you bought an annual policy in July.

Assuming that is the policy that now won't cover you for any claims associated with your psychiatric condition, then they are acting as any insurer would once you report a new condition that they aren't prepared to cover.

Whilst you continue with your complaint re the wording, you do need to decide whether or not you wish to take the holiday without this cover.

If you decide not to risk it you need to confirm with the insurer that they will pay out any charges you incur when cancelling now (due to them not covering your new condition), and proceed with the cancellation.

If you delay and decide to cancel nearer the time they may have grounds to wash their hands of any claim as they have notified you already that they cannot cover anything related to your illness.

One policy, two parts- part A is pre travel, part B is travelling. They have written a statement saying they cannot cover part B. I have tried contacting them but no- one can tell me whether they will pay out. Just to fill in a claim form and see. This is why I'm here to seek opinion as I can't get it there.
Unexpected mental illness seems to be something people don't want to insure unless you have specialised cover. I feel abandoned by this system- as well as battling daily with my problems - it's scary.

You need to take a practical view over this because if your complaint needs escalating (which looks likely as your insurer has this covered by their policy condition) it won't be concluded before your holiday.

Your insurer is not unusual by saying they won't cover your new condition (they would take the same view over a sudden physical condition that they couldn't cover you for), though as already advised were you to cancel now because of their withdrawal of cover they should pay your cancellation costs.

    Your alternatives are:

    1) Accept you have to pay yourself for any psychiatric issues if you continue your holiday.

    2) Try and get cover elsewhere (maybe a specialist insurer can help)

    3) Cancel now
