Do Amazon Firesticks allow the user to watch Amazon TV (ie NEW Top Gear) for free ?
or is there a subscription to pay ?
Are they any good ?

    No, they won't. Amazon stuff tends to be "free" if you've got an Amazon Prime subscription at £79 per year.

    However, as the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick are Android boxes there are other apps that can be added which offer access to other TV/movie facilities. Kodi (formerly Xbox Media Center, XBMC) is a popular one, but there are other apps as well. The Amazon menu doesn't provide easy access to such apps (and you've got to "sideload" them from another device, effectively installing them through the "tradesman's entrance" that is the Android Debug Bridge) but there's an excellent alternative menu called FireStarter that allows easy access to these apps. Look for "amazon firestarter" on Google.

    Can't watch Amazon content for free. It's £79 for a year.

    I have one with Kodi and it's excellent.
