cannot boot laptop

trying to help a friend rescue his HP G60 vista laptop.
he attempted a factory reset which has failed and now on bootup there is just a black screen with the white text reading:
BOOTMGR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
all this does is return the machine to this screen. trying to enter safe mode by pressing f8 on bootup does nothing either.
needless to say he has no discs to rescue this laptop. is there any way of saving this without spending a lot or is it just dustbin fodder?
many thanks for any advice.
