windows 10 success story - at last

my back up laptop was a vista based upgraded to windows 7 acer aspire 5536, circa 2009-10.
had given great service but was now rendered almost unusable as it was so slow to do anything on.
anyway, forced the upgrade to windows 10 (as i was not offered a scheduled upgrade) and have to say its been fantastic.
i opted for a clean install so backed up anything i wanted but most was just accumulated junk, and went for it.
machine is as good as new with no hitches. boots really fast and all appears to be working as normal (dvd drive, printer etc).
i have deleted the windows.old file as it was around 350gb and was taking up most of my hard drive.

well recommended for breathing new life into a machine i was getting ready to bin!!

you say "i opted for a clean install " then you go on to say you deleted your old windows folders to save space.

after installing win 10 and regeresting the machine with Microsoft , you can then download the iso file , boot from pendrive/dvd and do a CLEAN INSTALL , by deleting all partitions and starting from scratch ,

this method will in fact give you a much faster machine with a lot less disk usage

enfield freddy is quite right, you will probably find it even faster with a "true" clean install.

I used to know someone who regularly did clean re-installs of past versions of Windows simply to keep things running fast.

Can anyone list what happens with Windows over time to slow it down. I imagine at least some of it is users never deleting downloaded installation files, and never running disk clean (cleanmgr).
  • I have Acer Aspire 5532 which is also very slow.

I'm on Windows 7 and haven't as yet been asked to install Windows 10. I know next to nothing about the inner workings of the computer so am very wary of installing Windows 10 and not knowing what I'm doing. Any help from you techies would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Deleting downloaded files and running the "disk cleaner" would only save hard disk space, which won't make Windows run any faster (unless the drive is almost full).

I'm not entirely sure why Windows installations inevitably slow down, but I imagine that it comes from using badly-written software that modifies system files, library files, and/or registry keys improperly.

Windows OSes prior to XP were so unstable that you'd have to use registry cleaners and reinstall the OS quite frequently -- possibly due to the "DLL hell" involved in running 16-bit applications in shared memory space.

Things are much better now, but there's not much you can do to avoid the problem. One thing you could do, if you find yourself trying out new software, is to install the program in a sandbox. By doing so, your "real" computer files are left intact and virtualised in a sandbox. If you delete the sandbox, it's as if the program was never installed on your computer at all.

The free version of Sandboxie is a good sandboxing program for Windows, if you're interested:

That has the ring of truth about it.

I use Linux as my main OS at home, which never seems to slow down but, of course, software installation is by and large only via "approved sources" i.e. the official repositories, so I guess that keeps the whole thing working as a coherent whole.

I have windows 7 and it haqs started to run slow , I know some about computers and do all the usual cleans etc.

I was thinking of windows 10 upgrade but not sure until now , so I think I will upgrade!
  • clean up , remove un used progs and a good defrag , install win 10 update , make sure its registered , , on setting up win 10 , and it gets to settings , DO NOT use defaults , turn off a load of things you do not want

I scarily believe windows 10 is the last windows? They'll just keep updating it? I'm concerned it'll slow to a grind at various points
