People ring me and it cuts off after one ring and ok after that.

A few people have noticed when they ring me on my landline (Sky) that it rings once then cuts off. Then able to redial and speak to me without problems.

Don't have any issues with ringing others.

Then when I get these calls, the display on my phone says External call and not the number as its stored on my phone's phonebook. Unsure if these are connected.

What is going on?

I have no idea. Do you get many marketing calls? I wonder if hanging up on the first ring puts them off redialling. Your friends would redial but a automated dialler would just give up. Fix it and you may now get all those calls come through.

Sounds like 'ring trip' , basically the exchange starts to call your line, but a fault condition fools the exchange into thinking you have answered the call so the ringing signal stops, this is usually a fault on the line between your house and the exchange but can also occasionally be your own equipment , so before you report it to your service provider (Sky) you need to disconnect everthing and with 1 phone preferably a corded phone plugged directly into master socket test port, try some incoming calls to your line...see if they ring trip or ring correctly....
The fact that you say that people call , get ring trip, re call and that call is successful means that you will have to try it, then wait some time before trying it again
If it is a line problem, the initial ringing current of the call that failed, temporarily breaks down the fault, so the next call works, but over time the fault condition builds back up and starts to cause the ring trip again, this unfortunately makes proving the fault onto Openreach difficult, and also difficult for the fault to be located by Openreach .it could be hours between the ring trip being cleared by an incoming call, and the fault condition building back up to the point of causing ring trip, bad weather and water ingress into the cables is usually the cause, and if the weather improves the fault goes away, but comes back the next time is rains, but if when you report it to Sky the 'fault' is not present, they tend to say the line tests ok so go away, you may need to persist and not get fobbed off

    Update

Corded phone plugged into socket on landing works OK.

Phone in lounge which has router plugged in the same microfilter not working and no Internet connection (using mobile Internet) so will swapping filters help?

I don't have the time to do this as need to leave for work next few mins.

Never had a problem with the phoneline in the five and a half years here.

Which is the master socket? Yes, swap out the ADSL filters for known good ones one at a time. You need working filters on every active extension, including a Sky box, if connected.

People cannot ring me now. I have tried this on my mobile, one ring and it cuts off. My phone doesn't ring when this happens. Can make calls out.

The only phone I can ring out is on my crappy £5 corded phone. The cordless pair of phones don't work. I pick up a handset and no dial tone is heard when I press the green button.

Doesn't matter which socket the phones are plugged into.

Why would my cordless phones not working? Is it because there is a fault with the phoneline, they don't work or coincidence?

    Engineer should be coming tomorrow.
