Note that one third of children who are abused by an adult do not tell anyone at the time according to the NSPCC; I am surprised it is not much higher.

You are very wise to control your own emotions when you talk to your son but you also need a safe outlet for those emotions if you are to support your son longer term.

I remain astonished at how many people have had similar experiences to your son; I was once in meet up when the conversation opened up and only one in the group did not have some experience of inappropriate sexual activity, mainly with someone older.

Your son needs support that is appropriate to his specific needs. There is however a fine line between making sure he knows what happened was not OK behaviour by the older person and knows more about keeping himself safe in the future and pathologising the situation.

Horrid things happen and it is important to acknowledge that they are horrid and those to whom they happen may be less trusting in the future but it is also possible use the learning and move on.
