How to reclaim tax from imported engagement ring

Hello all,
I am worried sick and desperate for any advice.
I purchased an engagement ring for my girlfriend from the reputable James Allen. I paid the import tax of around £700 on the rings arrival to the UK via Fed-Ex their chosen delivery partner.
However the ring I have received is not what I ordered. They have accepted responsibility and will pay for the ring to be returned to them but said I will need to try and recover the tax myself.
Does anybody have any idea how to do this? Fed-Ex say they just arrange for the tax to be paid on arrival, I have tried to get in touch with HMRC but I couldn't get through via phone and it supposedly takes them 15 days to return an e-mail.
I am worried sick and haven't slept a wink last night. I am due to propose to my girlfriend today. I'm not worried about that but I am so anxious I am going to have to foot a tax bill for an incorrect product I am not keeping.
I have made an official complaint to James Allen but I'm sure they are going to continue with the stance that the tax is my responsibility.
Absolutely any help or advice will be so greatly appreciated
