Faux brick wall covering

Hello all.

We currently have a plastered wall we wanted to chip off and reveal the brickwork underneath but a few people more professional than me have said its not worth the effort and to get faux brick wall coverings instead.

I've been looking around to find out the cost of said wall coverings, but can anyone point me in the right direction? I've seen three kinds in the real world:

1) A flat printed vinyl that's basically wallpaper.
2) A thick, very realistic cover that has depth and texture and very believable.
3) A version that's basically somewhere between the two, with only a slight texture.

As seating will be right up against the wall, we'd want a faux effect to be the more realistic 2nd type and not so obviously fake close-up. Problem is I can't seem to find any clear distinction online if it's wallpaper or a thick cover and photos don't seem very clear. Any advice on where I can find the real thing or price of it would be appreciated! :j

Have you looked at 'brick slips'?

Forget naff vinyl, or wall paper, brick slips are made just like bricks only much thinner like a tile so have the texture and appearance of a true brick.

That's what I would choose as well

As above, brick slips give a really good finish. They are thin slices of brick set on to the wall. But not cheap!

  • Ah, thank you! 'brick slips' I hadn't heard of, I think it's what I was looking for. Unfortunate thing is it's a long wall and looks like it would cost at least £1k to buy that much

Unless we can find something cheaper we might just go for actually chipping the old plaster off. Might take a couple of days of hard work but... saving a grand seems worthwhile.

But you are assuming the brick work underneath is in good condition. Brick work that is designed to be covered in plaster is not built to the same visual standard as exposed brickwork. Your advice has been correct. You may well open up a can of worms and end up having to get the wall replastered.

  • I did a wall in brick slips and they were brilliant, got a lot of admiring comments. However as pointed out not cheap to buy, but definitely worth it.
