Unrequested transfer between my bank accounts

Today, whilst checking my online banking, I noticed an amount had been transferred to a savings account. I checked my savings account which is with a different bank and the money was in there. I generally transfer funds at the end of each month, but I don't remember making this transfer and there are no direct debits set up on the account.

It's not a huge problem as it's not going to make me overdrawn or anything, but it seems odd to me. Should I be worried?

  • Are you sure you had not set up a future payment from the sending bank?

If it worries you then contact the bank's internet banking team who will tell exactly how/when it happened.

    Take it from there.

Assuming you have this account set up as an existing payee, could it be possible that you simply made an error in the date of the payment when setting up your next payment in advance?

I had a look but I don't think so. It's the account I use to transfer what's left of my money at the end of the month so it's never the same amount twice.

That is entirely possible. You do have to enter a date so maybe I put the wrong one. Will have to check my statement for the last payment.

I was worried it might have been fraudsters but I guess they don't waste time transferring money around people's various accounts.

If you requested the payment last weekend, the payment date might have defaulted to the next working day, i.e. November 2nd. What is the date on your transaction?

Does anyone else apart from yourself have access to your PC? Who else lives with you?

    how about a standing order?

I didn't make a transfer at the end of last month as I had to spend money on home repairs so the only thing I can think is that I accidentally put November as the date for September's payment. Didn't think to check that when I was logged in but will check today.

Shouldn't be any standing orders either and it's not an amount I'd taken before. I did wonder if I'd accidentally set up a monthly payment but can't see any evidence of it.

Only other person who lives here is DH and he doesn't have access to my bank or savings accounts. I don't think he even knows my laptop password as he has his own and doesn't use mine at all.

Ah, there we go. Payment at the end of September/start of October didn't come out so I must have put November date on it instead. Am annoyed with myself because I am normally really good about checking these things. Still, money in the savings is never a bad thing.

Thank you all for your help, and not pointing out that I'm an idiot. Feel a bit dumb for worrying now and not even thiking to check the previous month. :o

Glad you could find a reason for the transaction.

Now a question for you: why are you using a savings account for your savings? Have you maxed all the good current accounts that pay between 3 and 5 times more interest than savings accounts?

That is what I meant by future date payment.
My bank only allows future payments for 31 days so this is probably what has happened. Not sure if you can check yourself after a payment has been made without asking the bank to check its log.

It could be a FD Regular Saver but as you have to set up a SO to fund that it seems unlikely.
