Red Sea Resorts and Petra in December/January

I'd definitely check out the climate. This was on my short list for early next year but ruled out due to the weather.0

I'm off to Sri Lanka at the end of November for the Cricket. Royal Jordanian was the cheapest way to get there, so I thought I'd stop off in Jordan for a few days.
I've done my homework and it can get bloody cold (and wet) that time of year. The weather gets better the further South you go, but really dosen't get warm until you're down in Aqaba.0 -
Going on a Red Sea cruise at New Year with Thomson. Have been to Egypt before and it's been really cheap to hire a taxi for the day to see the sights that way (there are 4 of us, so the cost of the organised trips can be huge).
I imagine the cost of the excursions through Thomson is going to be v. expensive - has anyone done the cruise and then arranged their own excursions ie to Petra, Luxor or Dead Sea?
