Swinton livid!

Just got a quote to renew car insurance from a comparison site. My old insurer was Swinton however the renewal was £10 more a month so I cancelled the policy. I Submitted my details on a comparison site and Swinton was the cheapest at £20 a month. I applied and paid £36 for the first payment with 11 payments of £20 to follow. This was 5 days ago. Received a letter today stating due to our recent comunication your payments will increase from £20 to £40 a month. Will be calling them tomorrow however, does anyone know if they can do this?

It really depends on their reasons. Ask them.
  • I'm wondering if perhaps they've compared your old policy with your new policy you've taken online and found discrepencies ie. Claims and convictions that still need to be declared .

Surely all that's happened is that they have discovered you are not a genuine new customer so removed the discount that is only available for them? Some insurers will allow you to become a new customer again immediately after completing a policy but perhaps Swinton (or the actual insurer) is not one of them.
  • I suppose the OP can always complain - and if necessary take it to FOS.

Unless FOS decided it was an exercise of legitimate commercial judgement, it would cost Swinton £550 to get the £240 it thinks it is entitled to.
