Induction clearance

Options
Aplogies if this posts twice. I thought I had posted but cannot see my post now.

I am in the middle of a very painful kitchen fitting process at the moment and have today noticed that the wall cupboards above my induction hob overhang by 90mm, they are 495mm above the induction hob and sit either side of an extractor unit in the middle which is 645 above.

Surely the cupboarss either side are going to get damaged by the heat from the back hobs on the induction?

Is there a minimum clearance that wall units should be above the hob? I can't see any such recommendation in the instruction manual.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi

Can you post a picture or a diagram.

From how I think you have described the situation I don't think anything is illegal but what I think you will experience is the overhanging wall units each side will absorb moisture from cooking pots under and therefore something will need to be done to change the layout.

Is it 45mm overhang each side or 90mm each side, on an electric hob the min recommend clearance above is 650mm, 645 is fine.
As long as it's 45mm each side and not overhanging the rings themselves it should be fine.

What width of hob is it?
  • Thanks both, I'll try to get a picture and see how to upload.

Let me see if I can be clearer....

The hob is 800 wide, the extractor unit is 620 wide and sits 600 approx up from the hob.
The two wall units either side of the extractor overhand the hob by 90 each and are approximately 450 above the hob.
I just boiled some water in a pan on the back hob and the steam caused a lot of condensation on the wall unit overhanging.
  • So, to clarify zoob, it's 90mm either side and most certainly overhanging the two back hobs.

Thanks for the quick reply, I get what you're saying, it doesn't look like the gap was designed for the 80cm hob more a standard size hob, if it was a kitchen designer that planned that space for the 80cm hob, I'd go back to them and get them to sort it out, they have design regulations that they must atter to in relation to placement of appliances and unit spacings.

I agree, it's a design issue and needs rectifying.

Did you change specification at some point from a 600mm wide hob to an 800mm wide one?
  • Thank you both for your swift and helpful responses.

Yes, I can see that these measurements look entirely as though they are planned around a 600 hob.

We provided our own hob in consultation with the kitchen company and let them know from the very start the exact size and specification. In fact, in their original pricing confirmation to us, they had assumed a 900 hob despite the measurements aligning more with a 600.

Incidentally, this is the same company who currently have me in my fifth week of fitting and aside from this issue, I have a drawer in a corner that catches on the adjacent door handle so doesn't fully open, 70/30 doors on my 50/50 fitted fridge freezer and a number of other issues they insist on continually referring to as 'snags' despite me feeling we are not even at the finished kitchen stage yet, let alone the snagging stage!
  • Zoob, you mention 'design regulations' in your previous post, is there anywhere I can access what these regulations enforce that you know of?

That will be specific to the hob you've bought - but any competent designer will know that wall cupboards are not allowed to overhang.

Its a design flaw plain and simple and even if it was designed around a 60cm hob, the units are simply too close to the hob for comfort.

DO you have any written confirmation from the kitchen company saying that the specific hob dimensions you supplied was OK? Without this, you may find it difficult to get anywhere given that they seem to be disaster prone on the other problems you highlight.
