I have also been told having more than one current account lowers your credit rating a little but not sure how true that is
You can safely take that as a lie. Plenty of people here have multiple accounts with multiple banks, some have over 20 or even over 30, and most people have had this number of accounts for several years. None of them has ever reported a problem with their credit worthiness. The accounts are generally kept in credit, though, unless there is a special offer for 0%/no fee overdrafts.

So much for the worlds local bank.

Is there not a HSBC where you are?

Won't they allow you to draw out some cash?

You could open a savings account with an ATM card.
Almost all of these can be used in overseas ATMs.

    1) Complain - Sounds like someone clicked the wrong button, that's not your fault. If it's a genuine error you have cause for a distress and inconvenience award at the least

    2) Have backup, open a credit card!

    3) Paul_1977 is right - HSBC can, in certain circumstances, arrange for an emergency withdrawal from a local branch (prepare to sit and wait for a while though)

    4) Don't complain to the branch, complain to head office (including the central complaints people you've been linked to above). Branch stuff are overworked and underpaid and don't have the time/incentive to deal with it properly
