I found a tick on my dog today

Shock was the first thing, followed by where the hell did he get it??

I only walk on the beach or the local park. Tried soap, alcohol and used tweezers in the end, but think I have left some in as it came away leaving what I can only describe as black goo, so have I left the head in?

It was not easy as me and my hubbie had our dog in a half nelson type hold to do this.

I have put some tea tree cream on it and will monitor it, should I do anything else?
Sometimes I wake up grumpy, other times I let him sleep !:rotfl:

Which is why theres things called tick hooks.

Ticks come from deer or sheep and feed off blood. When they have had their fill they drop off and wait for another passing host. So its possible to pick them up from parks where other dogs have been walked even though there are no sheep or deer. They will also attach themselves to humans which is why when out walking in long grass its best to tuck trousers in the socks.

Id pop into the vets. see if they cant get the rest out and perhaps your dog will need an antibiotic cover.
  • ok if you dont want the ticks coming back
bob martains flea & tick treatment, cheaper than frontline which my dog was on when she got infested with ticks,I pulled them out with tweezers, worst of all I found them on my kids!!! I thought they had body lice! tick season lasts till about june(I could be wrong)

my dog only goes down the beach but anywhere near farmland or countryside will have them as they move around on other animals.

my grandad was a vet and he swore by lighting a cigarette and holding it next to the tick, the heat made them drop off! wouldnt like to try it on a particularly hairy dog though!!

If you are in an area where there are a lot of ticks, you might be as well to use Frontline Spray. Where I used to walk my dog when we lived in Spain was terrible for ticks and I think I must have tried most things but the Frontline spray was definitely the best.
    It's prescription only.

Brings back memories of Spain and of my sisters dog , who came back home after 3 days af absence as he was after a girl on heat and he was crawling, You could hardly see the face for the ticks UGG.
Frontline for a day or so and off they came.

So glad i dont live in Spain.

I perfected my tick removal skills on a poor little Greyhound called Daisy, she had been running wild with a flock of sheep for a couple of weeks before being caught. She had 72 of the grim little creatures!

The Vaseline method and the tick-hooks work well, but I prefer to use my nails, it's strangely satisfying:o
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
  • By far the easiest way and cheapest to do it i've found is to put your finger on the end of it a spin it round in an anti clockwise motion very quickly. The tick will become disoriented and fall off, easy!
