At what point do you get a black mark??

Options
Hi, sorry to be so lame but I am in the fortunate position not to have any debt other than our mortgage at the moment and have no idea what to do next.

Through no fault of my own Extra Energy have sent my details to a debt recovery agency because I cancelled my direct debit when I changed supplier. My last payment went through 2/10 and we were and are still in credit. We ceased to be a customer 21/10 and a final bill has been calculated and they owe us a small amount. We have never missed a payment. They sent confirmation of us leaving 6/10 and debt recovery letters started on 10/10. We are not and never have been in debt. It's all because I cancelled the direct debit and their billing system didn't pull all the payments through from the statement to the billing page. I have raised a complaint directly and logged it on the Resolver website but have no confidence in them and fear that this has already adversely impacted my credit rating. I have looked via Noddle but have read on other threads that those ratings are not that accurate. So how do I find out and at what point should I go to Ofcom? Sorry for being so naive.

Any advice gratefully received.

    there are three credit agencies
    experian
    callcredit
    equifax

you can get the statutory report for £2 or a free one month trial (but make sure you cancel in time)

to need to wait for their complaints procedures before further action.
  • I had a response earlier. They are treating it as a customer service query rather than a complaint!!!! The letter was titled complaint and I have sent a reply leaving them in no doubt that I want this processed as a complaint. Its terrible that you are completely at their mercy. I think its just delay tactics.

Surely this is simpler that you're making it out to be. Debt recovery was obviously started in error so it'll be easy to get it sorted out. You've done everything you need to do. Why are you so worried?
  • Hi Shortcrust, I admit total ignorance - but the letter has said that my details have been passed to a debt recovery agency and a warrant of entry has been applied for. I might be worrying over nothing but having never had anything like this before the worry is that I don't know how far this goes before I get an adverse credit rating. I want to ensure this is not a problem now, not wait 'til I apply for a mortgage next year and get refused because I didn't do something now. Being told a warrant of entry has been applied for also gives me some cause for concern when it is really all their fault. Unless this is just scare tactics on their behalf, in which case, surely they should not be able to make threats like that. I am probably worrying about nothing but this has happened in 3 weeks. If they can escalate this to debt collection in 3 weeks when there is no debt, I can't afford to wait another 3 weeks when they have fitted the threatened pre paid meter and forced entry and then someone say - "oh you should have done such and such" that's why I am asking how bad this might already have got.
