Opticians

I guess this is the right place.

I have glasses from specsavers 2 years ago and my eye test is soon due.

since I've got my current glasses the prescription has never felt quite right but I was told I'd get used to it.

Is there any truth in that big chain opticians are rubbish?

Also, anyone ever got the cheap glasses that are often promoted here like the 2 pairs for £19?

My frames (rimless) cost nearly £200. I know that is expensive but specsavers told me at the time that my next eye test I could reuse the frames and update just the lens (the price of which I think work can cover). Could any optician do this or will another optician not give new lens for a specsavers frame?

As your frames are rimless, you may have trouble finding another optician that will change the lenses only

Oh really? I thought rimless would be easier.

I might just try a different specsavers and see. Independant ones I think are more pricey.

What about having an eye test and getting the prescription then getting glasses online? Thing about online is that they can't measure your eyes/face but then again I don't have trouble when buying sunglasses online.

Buying sunglasses is very different from buying prescription glasses. That said, I've never had problems buying glasses online with a prescription from a UK optometrist.

I buy my glasses online and it is so much cheaper. Measuring your pd is easy with a ruler, there are guides on youtube

    Specsavers are really crap.
Take my word for it (I just know)
I have been a Customer and I have also worked for them
so I have seen both sides as it were!
    Try Vision Express
    They are really good!

    Thanks.

Specs can be really pricey and my work only allows for £20 test and £55 towards glasses and there is no negotiation on that. bit cheapskates if u ask me as I'm sure my eyesight has deteriorated because of work.

Glad to hear online can be just as good as I'd like to have about 3 pairs to keep one in car an another to keep in house.

I've never really been happy with opticians I've visited. I also didn't like Specsavers much, but I went to an independent and they launched into a very heavy sell on varifocals which I didn't really want.

Didn't like Boots either as they talked me into a contact lens trial that was completely useless.

I've never tried Vision Express, so might give them a go next time.

I don't really agree about online glasses. I didn't find measuring the PD easy, and the resulting glasses never felt right, so for me it wasn't really worth the saving.

PD=Pupillary Distance ie the distance between the pupils; it's used to centre the focus in the lenses of your spectacles. (I'm not an optician and would welcome correction if that's an over simplification.)

It's a figure that's usually measured at the fitting stage and jealously guarded by the High Street opticians in an attempt to deter internet dispensing
